Dear Kenneth Oppel,
My name is Vanessa. I’m 12 years old. I read your book Half Brother for an assignment in language. Your novel reminds me of the ape KoKo who like Zan also has the ability to speak American Sign Language. I admire how your novel focuses on the relationship between Ben and Zan and how it evolves throughout the story. They begin as ape and boy but they end up as brothers who love each other through the ups and downs that a thrilling adventure can bring. Also your novel touches on a serious topic which is Animal Experimentation. Which you really touched on in the book talking about the chimps who went to space and the one who was in a coma. I think that you really influenced people about the dangers of Animal Experimentation and how strays or wild animals can be treated. I look forward to reading other books of yours such as 'The Boundless'.
Sincerely,
Vanessa Leung

Dear Kenneth Oppel,
I recently read your book 'Half Brother'. I liked how it had many strong messages and significant ideas that can be taken away from the text. I like how your book focused on the experimentation of animals. It showed me that experimentation has more than a short-term effect. In your book it showed the bond between Ben and Zan which is also can be a representation of the bond between humans and animals. It is not often interpreted in books that animals have emotion, however the book really showcased that perspective. From an overall perspective I felt that the book was about accepting change- which is a challenge that many people around my age have to adapt to. I admire your book as it makes people see our lives through new mindsets.
Sincerely,
Sahaj Puri
